CARICOM’s Council for Trade and Economic Development Discusses Economic Concerns

The 46th Meeting of the CARICOM’s Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) was held in Georgetown, Guyana, May 16-17. Due to the many ongoing international and domestic issues the Council tried to find “appropriate mix of methodologies and strategies” to focus on its expanding agenda.

Bhutan: Surveillance Report on GMO Element in Animal Feed

Passed in 2015, the Biosafety Act of Bhutan provides information on the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms (LMOs), genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their products. The Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA) is the national competent authority for the implementation and enforcement of this Act and all other biosafety related activities in the Kingdom. At the beginning of the 2018, a special section was created on BAFRA’s website for the legislation and guidelines related to GMOs.

2017 Codex Alimentarius Updates on Contaminants

Codex Alimentarius has published a new consolidated version of CODEX STAN 193-1995 General Standard for Contaminants and Toxins in Food and Feed on November 29, 2017. The standard is the result of the 40th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), which was held in July of this year in Geneva.

Bhutan: First Organic State by 2020?

Bhutan could be the first country with 100% organic farming. At the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development (2012), the Prime Minister of Bhutan announced country’s plans to convert all his nation's agricultural land to organic farms. In 2014, during the global conference of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) held in Bhutan, country’s agricultural minister announced that the country’s target to become organic is the year of 2020 (Bhutan: Organic By 2020).
