Additives in Mexico - Latest Amendment

Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (COFEPRIS) published new amendments for the “Agreement that determines additives and adjuvants in food, beverages and food supplements, their use and health standards – DOF 16/07/12” were published on September 20, 2016. The additions listed below of new substances and/or functions for existing substances published in this amendment have previously been approved by the Secretary of Health.

Taiwan FDA Publishes New Pesticide MRLs

On October 26, 2016, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) published an amendment to “Standards for Pesticide Residue Limits in Foods”, changing MRLs for 14 pesticides in 85 food categories. In addition, the list of food categories has been amended, by adding Coix Seed to cereals and crops category, Asplenium, Water Lily, Diplazium esculentum to Leaf vegetables with small leaves, Aoectochilus formosanus to Herbs and spices. These changes took effect immediately.

China Updates Draft Rules for Online Food Trade

On October 19, 2016, Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council P.R. China released “Implementing Rules for the Food Safety Law (revised draft version)” for public comments. This document regulates online food trade, and is aimed at preventing food safety incident coming from food sold online, directly or through trading platforms.

EU: Sucralose in Chewing Gum & Steviol Glycosides Definition

The European Union published the Commission Regulation (EU) 2016/1776 of October 6, 2016 amending Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards the use of sucralose (E 955) as a flavour enhancer in chewing gum with added sugars or polyols.

Japan Labelling Rules Could Change in 2017

All food products processed in Japan will most likely be required to have declaration of origin for major ingredients in the near future. The declaration shall be “国産 (domestic)” for the Japanese ingredient, or “COUNTRY” for the imported ingredient. At present, only 25 processed foods must have origin declared for major ingredients.
