On May 4, 2018, the Food and Drug Administration announced an extension (approximately 1.5 years) to the compliance dates regarding the final labeling rules that appeared in the Federal Register on May 27, 2016 for the United States.

On September 29, 2017, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a proposal to extend the Food Labeling Final Rules original compliance date of July 26, 2018, to January 1, 2020, for manufacturers that have annual food sales of $10 million or more. For manufacturers that have food sales less than $10 million, the proposed compliance date would extend to January 1, 2021. No other changes have been made to the final rules of the Nutrition Facts Label and Serving Size.

On December 14, 2016, the Government of Canada published the “Regulations Amending the Food and Drug Regulations (Nutrition Labelling, Other Labelling Provisions and Food Colours)” in the Canada Gazette Part II, which outlined the new requirements for food labeling in Canada.

On January 4, 2017, two draft guidance documents were issued by the FDA (not for implementation at this time). Industry has 60 days to provide comments before the final documents are issued.
