On December 6, 2017, The Korean Food and Drug Safety Ministry (MFDS) released an updated consolidated regulation to the current food labelling in order to provide consumers with clearer information on food safety. The new legislation is expected to go into force on January 1, 2020.
Main changes that will be introduced in new labelling rules are as follows:
- Clarification of regulations through maintenance of terms and phrases, especially the food category terms and the processing method of some specific food products.
- New labeling rules for non-alcoholic beverages are added, which point out that sparkling drinks and mixed drinks are alcohol-free. This indirectly informs teenagers these drinks are substitutes for alcoholic beverages to prevent them from prematurely forming poor drinking habits.
- Reflecting the amendment of "Food Specifications and Standards/Food Code," "Food Additive Code," and harmonizing regulations. For example, flaxseed intake per day and per meal are specified in the Food Code so the notice of consumer safety precautions and content/weight of flaxseed should be marked in the related products.
- For irradiated foods, in order to deliver correct information of irradiation method, allowing the indication of the type of radiation actually used for irradiated foods to avoid the misunderstanding of the process.
