On November 9, 2017, FSANZ called for submission of food derived from herbicide-tolerant cotton line GHB811. This cotton line is genetically modified for tolerance to two herbicides, glyphosate and isoxaflutole. This submission will be end by 6 pm (Canberra time) on December 6, 2017.
The two main foods derived from cotton line GHB811 are cottonseed oil and linters. Cottonseed oil could be used in foods as frying or cooking oil, margarine, shortening, all kinds of salad dressing and so on. Linters could be processed into cellulose, which may be used in food additives, such as anti-caking agents and thickeners.
The labelling of genetically modified foods must comply with section 1.5.2-4 of standard 1.5.2. Foods must be labelled as “genetically modified” when containing novel DNA or protein or being listed in subsections S26-3(2) and (3) of schedule 26. Those foods being listed in these subsections have altered characteristics as subject to the condition that labelling must comply with 1.5.2-4. However, FSANZ has determined that food derived from GHB811 will not have altered characteristics.
The cottonseed oil and linters derived from GHB811 are unlikely to contain novel DNA or protein since they are being refined to extract crude oil from cottonseed or highly purified into cellulose, so they are unlikely to require carrying the labelling of “genetically modified”. However, if any novel DNA or protein is contained, complying with the requirements of the section of 1.5.2-4 is still required.
