South African Department of Health is looking to amend the Regulation governing the maximum limits for pesticide residues that may be present in in foodstuffs, published under Government Notice No. R 246 of 11 February 1994 and its amendments.

In The Government Notice No. 334 of April 7, 2017 the authorities introduced new definition regarding the following crops categories:

  • Berries group
  • Brassica vegetables or cruciferae
  • Citrus group
  • Cucurbits group
  • Leafy vegetables
  • Leguminous beans group
  • Onion bulb group
  • Pepper group
  • Root and tuber vegetables group
  • Stone fruits
  • Tree nuts

This draft, which is open for public consultation until 7 July 2017, will also align with other Government Gazettes (GN 862 of July 29, 2016 and GN 853 of 2012), and will prohibit the use of the following chemical substances, removing the actual MRLs:

  • Aldicarb
  • Aldrin
  • Dinoseb
  • Endosulfan
