2017 Codex Alimentarius Updates on Contaminants

Codex Alimentarius has published a new consolidated version of CODEX STAN 193-1995 General Standard for Contaminants and Toxins in Food and Feed on November 29, 2017. The standard is the result of the 40th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), which was held in July of this year in Geneva.

Lessons to Be Learned from Fipronil Incident?

On July 20, 2017, Belgium notified the European Commission via RASFF – the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed, of fipronil presence in eggs imported from the Netherlands. The Content of fipronil in contaminated eggs ranged from 0.0031 to 1.2 mg/kg – ppm while the maximum residues levels (MRLs) in EU regulations for fipronil are set at 0.005 mg/kg. Presence of fipronil residues in eggs is believed to have been caused by the illegal use of this chemical on farms in the Netherlands to combat parasites in food-producing animals (chickens). This resulted in fipronil being detected in eggs produced by these animals.

China Updates GB Standards for Contaminants and Mycotoxins in Foods

On April 14, 2017 National health and family planning commission of the People’s Republic of China (NHFPC) released No. 2017-4 notice (in Chinese), publishing GB 2761-2017 National food safety standard Mycotoxins in Food and GB 2762-2017 National food safety standard Maximum Levels of Contaminants in Foods. Both standards will enter into force on September 17, 2017 and will repeal their previous version GB 2761-2011 and GB 2762-2012.
